Traveling Florida
Published in Paperback by John F Blair Pub (October, 2002)
Authors: Cathy Summerlin and Vernon Summerlin
Average review score:

Promotes over thirty loop driving tours
The collaborative effort of Cathy and Vernon Summerlin, Traveling Florida focuses entirely on Florida, and promotes over thirty loop driving tours which cover both well-known spots and undiscovered havens throughout the state. The inclusion of maps would have made this even more valuable, but the blend of regional history, travelogue, and candid assessments of lodging and restaurants alike makes for an involving, recommended guide for anyone who is planning a trip to Florida.

Traveling the Trace
Published in Paperback by Rutledge Hill Press (May, 1995)
Authors: Cathy Summerlin and Vernon Summerlin
Average review score:

great companion to driving the Trace - very well-written
This is a "must" companion piece for anyone who drives the Natchez Trace, whether for 4 miles or 400. Without the book's detailed information about the Trace's history, the towns it runs through, and the many recreational opportunities along the way, the Trace would be just another road. The Summerlin's book and their subject remind us that life is indeed a journey, not a destination

Vernon Grant's Mother Goose
Published in Hardcover by Abrams Books for Young Readers (March, 1998)
Author: Vernon Grant

Illustration Top Rated
Vernon Grant, 1902-1990, illustrated advertisements and booklets given out as premiums by food companies. His most famous creations were the Snap, Crackle, Pop characters to promote Kellogg's Rice Krispies. I am 60 years old and grew up loving a booklet called Flibbedty Gibbet because the illustrations in this little story (given out to promote a custard) were so delightful. This week, while browsing through Mother Goose books at a local book store to buy a gift for a friend's child, I found this gem! Not only was I delighted by the thoughtful biography of Grant which appears at the end of the book, I was impressed that his illustrations are as wonderful today as they were years ago when my mother would read me the only Vernon Grant illustrated book I had. That little booklet also delighted my children who are now both in their 30s. I am ordering a copy of this for each of them. My son owns my Flibbedty Gibbet book so he can add this Mother Goose to his stock of collectibles. One last word for contemporary buyers: Grant's illustrations are vastly superior to any of the other Mother Goose books through which I browsed. The colors are vivid, the characters sweet and appealing, and, most importantly, imaginative. The price is right but, my only criticism: this book should have been at least three times longer! I'd pay more to see more of Grant's wonderful work!

A Local take
I may be writing this because I'm a life long Vernon resident, or that I am very interested in history, but I highly recommend this book for everyone. It shows the slow transition of Anytown, USA: from small farming village, to large farming township, to the coming of the railroad, which brought on a massive mining buisness, and then the introduction of the automobile, which brought tourism: two ski resorts (Well, more like one and a half nowadays) and even a water park. This is a must read for North Jersey residents, and it makes and excellent coffee table book for the locals. This is the book for history buffs who prefer looking to reading.

Vernon's Collectors' Guide to Orders, Medals & Decorations (with Valuations)
Published in Paperback by World War 2 Books and Video (01 June, 2000)
Author: Sydney B. Vernon
Average review score:

The Essential,No-Frills List
Mr. Vernon a retired British schoolteacher who resides in California has updated his popular and comprehensive guide to world medals and their prices. If one is a novice to the world of medal collecting, this book is a standard refernce. Copiously illustrated by black and white photos, the book is organized by country and thereafter by standard order of wearing precedence: Orders, gallantry awards, campaign awards, long service awards etc.. Vernon then lists each and every medal (including standard variations) at their "list" price as he has noted their sale over the past 5 years. Over 8,000 medals are listed by my count. Want to know how much a Silesian Eagle with swords is worth? Ever wondered what a Turkish "Gallipoli Star" looked like? This book can show you. The author also handily includes some surficial notes on various awards noting recent fakes and signs of copies. While this is no small, thin book its only frustration is that it contains a only a modest number (e.g. @1000) of photos relative to the items listed. However, this is understandible, since to illustrate every medal in the world be impossible.

Beatiful and fascinating
This lovely book, full beatiful photographs is a must for any one interested in American history and garden history in general. In fact it gives us Americans a garden history (slavery excluded) to be as proud of as the British are of theirs.
Lots of well researched interesting facts, useful advice, historical insight and pretty pictures make this book thoroughly enjoyable and I recomend it highly.
